@Maritime English Curriculum at TUMSAT

After a year (4 courses) of general English, we offer Deck English (2 courses) and Engine English (2 courses) for our third-year Deck and Engine cadets.

At the end of the third year (1st week of March), we offer a hands-on, intensive Maritime English seminar, which includes a cruise on the Shioji Maru, one of our own training ships, simulator and diesel lab sessions, boat drills, students' presentations, and more.

This seminar is open to students from abroad (in 2008, Singapore Maritime Academy kindly sent 4 cadets), and in 2008, we held Maritime English Teacher Training Seminar (METTS) concurrently with this intensive seminar, inviting distinguished Maritime English experts (Prof. Dr. Peter Trenkner and Prof. Boris Pritchard) and English speaking captain and chief engineer from the California Maritime Academy (Capt. John Keever and Chief Bill Davidson) as guest lecturers.

We also offer a port-to-port onboard Maritime English training on the Umitaka Maru for cadets in the special fishery course, with an expert native English speaking instructor "twinning" with a Japanese English teacher and ship's officers. In 2007, we taught on the Umitaka Maru whlie sailing from Port Louis, Mauritius, to Cape Town, South America.
