Wavel Ramkalawan

President of the Republic of Seychelles

Wavel Ramkalawan has served as the President of the Republic of Seychelles since October 2020.

Originally from Mahé, the principal island of Seychelles, Ramkalawan is an ordained minister in the Anglican Church and started his career as a priest. Through his pastoral work, he came into contact with people affected by social and civil injustices. In turn, this led Ramkalawan into politics and to question the practices of the one-party government in power at the time.

Previously, Ramkalawan led the National Assembly delegation at the Pan African Parliament and the SADC PF, where he chaired the Democratisation, Governance and Human Rights Committee. In the National Assembly, he chaired the Truth & National Reconciliation Committee, the Defence and Security Committee, the Islands Committee and the Finance & Public Accounts Committee.
